How to Stop Feeling Like a Fraud as a New Manager
Most new managers feel like they're one bad meeting away from being found out. Here's why that's normal — and the specific habits that make it fade.

The feeling isn't a signal that you're unqualified — it's a signal that you're doing something you haven't done before, which is a completely different problem. It fades through evidence, not through waiting to feel ready: small decisions made and owned, one after another, until the voice gets quieter.
Almost every first-time manager hits the same wall in the first few months: a nagging sense that everyone else knows what they're doing and you're one bad meeting away from being found out. It's common enough to have a name — impostor syndrome — and common enough that it's worth treating as a predictable phase of the transition, not a private flaw.
Why This Happens to Almost Everyone
You were promoted because you were good at the job you used to do — not because someone trained you to manage people. That's a real skill gap, and your brain correctly senses it. The mistake is translating 'I haven't done this before' into 'I don't belong here.' One is a fact about your experience. The other is a story you're telling yourself under pressure, and it's the story that does the damage.
Confidence Follows Competence — Not the Other Way Around
Waiting to feel confident before you act is a trap, because confidence is built by doing the thing, not by thinking about it until the fear goes away. Every manager who looks calm in a hard conversation today had a first version of that conversation that felt terrifying. The gap between them and you isn't natural ability — it's repetitions.
What Actually Quiets the Voice in Your Head?
- Keep a short decision log — a line a day on a call you made and why. Reading it back after a month is the fastest way to see real evidence you're capable, not just believe it.
- Ask for feedback before you're worried about it, not after. Waiting to ask just lets the anxious guessing fill the silence.
- Separate 'I don't know this yet' from 'I'm not capable of this' — write the actual sentence down when the feeling hits. It's rarely as absolute as it feels.
- Find one person — a peer, not your own manager — who'll tell you the truth without softening it. Impostor syndrome thrives in the absence of honest, low-stakes feedback.
When It's More Than Just Nerves
Some discomfort is just the normal cost of growth. But if the feeling is stopping you from making decisions, delegating, or having conversations you need to have, it's worth treating deliberately rather than waiting it out. Talking it through out loud — with a mentor, a peer, or Get Savvy's Strategic Partner — is often enough to separate the real gaps from the anxious noise.
Confidence is built through reps, not reassurance. Get Savvy's Execution Engine gives you a private space to run the conversations you're dreading — as many times as you need, before they're real.
